Limpopo businessman Rameez Patel, who is accused of killing his wife Fatima, was released on R250 000 bail by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Magistrate Mohammed Shaik said exceptional circumstances, namely that the couple’s children needed to be looked after, justified his release.
Shaik ordered Patel to report to the Westerberg police station three times a day, and not leave his home without the investigating officer’s approval. He had to surrender his children’s passports and not interfere with State witnesses.
During the bail hearing, Patel’s lawyer Tumi Mokwena dismissed the prosecution’s claim that he would flee the country because he had relatives in the UK and India.
Patel is accused of shooting Fatima in their rented flat in Nirvana, Polokwane, on April 10.
Patel will be back in court on July 7. News24
