The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has received a clean audit, which shows its financial statements are credible, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Wednesday.

“The ministry of transport, under whose mandate Sanral operates, is pleased that the agency has received yet another clean audit from the office of the auditor general of South Africa,” Peters said in a statement.

This bolstered public confidence in Sanral’s sound financial management, with their financial statements credible and complying with all statutory requirements.

“In short, everything was accounted for and all monies were properly spent and managed, despite various challenges that were faced,” Peters said.

“The audit will go a long way in increasing Sanral’s transparency and accountability while demonstrating commitment to meeting the requirements of the Public Finance Management Act at the state-owned company.”

Peters said Sanral was an engine room of South Africa’s economy, because its well-maintained, safe national roads network and bridges drove the wheels of economic growth and empowerment.

“As a credible custodian of taxpayers’ money and investor funds, it is thus imperative that there are no deficiencies in internal financial control,” the minister said.

Government, represented by the ministry as its sole shareholder and owner of Sanral, congratulated Sanral’s board, CEO Nazir Alli and his team for the clean audit.

It augured well for Sanral’s continued initiatives in transport, education, road safety and community development. SAPA
