Cape Peninsula University of Technology students living in university residences will be allowed to stay on campus for an additional week. This after the institution’s court order to have them removed was set aside in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday.

Students were initially given a deadline to vacate the residences by 16:00 on November 18 in a communique sent to students by Vice Chancellor Dr Prins Nevhutalu. It was sent three days before the deadline.

But CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley said the Western Cape High Court had since set the institution’s order aside, giving students more time.

This meant students had until December 4 – the end of term – to vacate.

She said since the arrest of 43 students on Monday at the Bellville campus on charges of public violence and contravening the Illegal Gatherings Act, there were no further protests. News24
