In-fighting stalling Marikana report: Holomisa

In-fighting in the ANC has stopped President Jacob Zuma from sharing the contents of the Marikana report with his fellow party leaders and Cabinet ministers, according to UDM leader Bantu Holomisa.

“It is clear that he has not yet shared what is contained there [in the report] with the ANC leaders, otherwise we would know because they leak things like sieves,” Holomisa told News24.

“The in-fighting going on there… it just tells you that if he were to table it in the top six [of the ANC]… he’s not sure whether they will go out and start using it to fight for positions if one of them is involved in the top six, same goes for Cabinet.”

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s name has been mentioned for the ANC presidency in 2017, with the party’s secretary general Gwede Mantashe as his deputy.

Pressure

Ramaphosa testified at the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the killing of 36 miners at the Lonmin Platinum mine in Marikana outside Rustenburg in 2012.

At the time of the shooting, Ramaphosa was a Lonmin director.

The deputy president has been criticised for the role he played during the violent unprotected strike at the mine.

It was not clear if Ramaphosa was implicated in the Farlam report.

Holomisa said maybe at the right time Zuma would consult with his leadership.

Zuma received the report from retired judge Ian Farlam, who chaired the commission, at the end of March.

There has been pressure from the mineworkers injured and arrested at the time, as well as civil society and opposition parties, on Zuma to release the report as soon as possible.

Zuma said in Parliament that he would release the report before the end of June.

“In politics, two days or a day is too long,” Holomisa said.

“He knows when he will pull the trigger. There’s no doubt [about] the role of some of these people in the executive.

“No judge cannot question that.” News24
