DJ Az laid to rest

Well-known DJ at a local music radio station, Abdul Aziz Abrahams (centre), better known as Az, was laid to rest at the Mowbray makbara on Saturday afternoon. The janaza took place at 3pm at the Parkwood Masjid. Abrahams, who was also an actor, was a volunteer and trainee in the VOC newsroom in 2000.

He is seen here with fellow actor Khalil Kathrada and VOC's Saawmiet Moos. He recently played roles in two movies, Confessions of a Gambler and More than Just a Game, both South African stories that have received international acclaim. He presented Heart Party Beatz on Friday and Saturday nights on Heart.

Meanwhile police confirmed that his body was found at 5am lying outside a silver BMW at an accident scene on the N1, close to the Giel Basson turn-off in the direction of Cape Town.

"The time of the accident as well as how it happened, is unclear at this stage, because it was the only vehicle found at the scene. The deceased was later identified as 31 year old, (Abdul) Abrahams from Fairways in Grassy Park, a well known DJ from a local Cape Town radio station. We registered a case of culpable homicide for further investigation," police spokesperson, Inspector November Filander said in a statement.

Anyone who witnessed the incident can contact the Parow police station on (021) 909 7100. Abrahams had been on duty as DJ at the Galaxy club on Friday evening where his radio station, Heart, had been broadcasting from on the previous day.

The radio station's website describes him as a family man devoted to his friends despite his public profile. "Every time I go on air, my challenge is to make a difference in one person's life by striking a chord that helps them to feel proud of who they are," the website quotes him to have said.

Meanwhile, film producers Anant Singh said on Sunday that the entertainment industry was deeply saddened by Abrahams' demise. His death was a huge loss to all, Singh said in a statement. "We are privileged to have worked with him on the film More Than Just a Game, which told the inspirational story of organised football on Robben Island," he said.

In the film, Abrahams portrayed former Robben Island inmate and freedom fighter Sedick Isaacs. "He was a talented actor and radio personality who had a zest for life. He will be missed by all of us, his multitude of fans and the South African entertainment industry," Singh said. Their thoughts and prayers were with the DJ's son, daughter and entire family. VOC
