The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has arranged a number of Ramadan outreach programs this weekend, in a bid to reconnect with the community during the sacred month of giving. MJC secretary-general Maulana Abdul Khaliq Allie said the first project they have lined up is a visit to the Porterville Prison on Friday 3rd of July. This is an all-male correctional facility and has about 450-500 inmates.

This visit, arranged by Sheikh Irfaan Abrahams, is to inspire and motivate the prisoners within the correctional facility. They have also involved the youth in this project by getting a nasheed group to perform for these prisoners. Members of the MJC will be conducting the Jumuah prayer with the inmates as well.

“The fundamental purpose of the MJC is to serve humanity and the Muslim community,” said Allie.

On Sunday 5th of July, the MJC will be receiving and hosting three representatives from an important delegation from Al-Azhar University.

“These scholars have come to the Western Cape with a mission of peace. They are going to be having various programs during the month of Ramadan and the MJC will assist and facilitate these activities.”

To mark the MJC’s 70th anniversary this year, it has coupled with VOC and Gift of the Givers, for the Ahlan Wa Sahlan outreach program in the impoverished area of Delft.

“The best way to celebrate this is to give back to the community. This area is faced with many difficult challenges. But despite their tough circumstances the community of Delft has pushed through and this is mainly because of its exceptional development in Islam.”

By conducting this program, the MJC aims to strengthen and unify the people. The program will start with a live broadcast by VOC and a Khatamal Quran programme.

The main focus of this program is to give exposure to the youth and therefore the opening qira’a will be delivered by Haafith Tauhir Leak and Khuddam-ul-Islaam, amongst other groups, will be rendering nasheeds. In an attempt to involve the community in this outreach program, the thikr will be conducted by the youth of Delft.

The MJC has also promised interesting lectures by Imam Mustafah and MJC stalwart Imam Yaseen Harris on the historical background of Islam and the history of the MJC. This will be followed by a report-back from various organisations conducting community services in the Delft community. MJC members Shaykh Irfaan Abrahams and MJC deputy president Shaykh Riad Fataar will also address musallees.

“Outreach is very crucial to the development of the people in any community. Supporting this initiative will not only be a benefit to the youth of Delft but to everyone as well as it is the month of Ramadan and the rewards are endless when good deeds are performed.” VOC (Amina Waggie)
