Nakba Day

OPINION by Zaachira Suliman – An annual calendar event during the month of May is the commemoration of the Nakba. Nakba day is the day of the “catastrophe”, which refers to the destruction of Palestinian society in 1948 when approximately 750 000 Palestinians were forced into exile by the Zionist terror groups.

Nakba day reminds the world of one of the most disastrous decisions undertaken by Britain and her allies in 1917. Britain, as the colonial power, held sway over Palestine. With the Balfour Declaration this treacherous conduct resulted in the illegal creation of the Zionist State of Israel on the 14th May 1948. This heralded the beginning of the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinians by the terrorist organisations of the Zionists.

Zionist forces used terror-tactics as the British mandate of Palestine came to an end in 1947-1948, to rid as much of the land of its Palestinian inhabitants as possible. Zionist forces depopulated more than 450 Palestinian towns and villages, most of which were demolished to prevent the return of the Palestinians.

Etched in the minds of Palestinians, the Nakba remains one of the greatest tragedies in their history. This fateful day in 1948 has resulted into a tapestry of events that has unravelled more bloodshed, turmoil, dispossession, oppression and terror.

The catastrophe of the 1940’s continues to this day and to many Palestinians is a reminder of the constant oppression and dispossession they face in everyday life as Israel maintains an illegal occupation and colonization of historic Palestine. Palestine is the largest remaining refugee population in the world that is subjected to constant violence, prejudice and inhumane standards of living. It is on this type of abomination that the apartheid state of Israel ‘celebrates’ its foundation of so-called independence and statehood.

The Media Review Network South Africa calls on the public and the South African Government to stand in solidarity and raise your voices against the largest remaining colonial entity based on violations of international law, human rights, injustices and dehumanization. Let the 15th of May be a day where South Africans join together to remember the people of Palestine. MRN

  1. If Israel has no right to exist, then neither does Pakistan. What the muslims have to realise is that they cannot have everything their way. Israel is the only jewish state that exists today. Muslims must accept the fact that they lost the argument and the war and move on to live their lives without harming others, like the vast majority of kaffir refugees have to do in this world.

The levantine muslim arabs must show some grace and humanity and let Israel and the Jews live in peace. Stop parasiting off the kaffir's donations using their pitiful self induced state to pluck on the kaffir heart strings. Move on "palestinian muslims" and prove that your religion civilises you.
