Western Cape police and the City of Cape Town have urged residents to refrain from making comments or posting pictures which are alarming on social media platforms.
This follows the circulation of old images of burning buses to create the impression that taxi violence in Delft and Nyanga had escalated.
The situation in these areas has been tense since the murder of two taxi drivers in Delft two weeks ago.
The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association and the Delft Taxi Association are also fighting over the control of taxi routes.
Police are maintaining a strong presence in the area.
The mayoral committee member for safety JP Smith says the images that were posted on Thursday on social media and some news networks are from incidents that occurred in 2014 and 2015.
Police have confirmed that no vehicles were set alight or shots fired Thursday.
Only one incident of stone throwing was reported Thursday and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding it.
Fourteen taxi operators in Delft were taken in for questioning after they were found with three firearms, but they were subsequently released.
In a separate incident, a 43-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of an illegal firearm.
