The Black Student Movement (BSM) is staging a sit-in at Rhodes University’s council chambers in Grahamstown.

This was reportedly over the failure of transformation at the university, according to the SABC.

The BSM has accused the university of not taking racism incidents seriously.

Allegations of racism surfaced after a white student allegedly called another the k-word on social media, according to the SABC.

Students were reportedly claiming this was not the first time this had happened at the university.

In a statement posted on the BSM Facebook page, the group said that on Wednesday they had occupied the council chambers and some of the rooms in the vice-chancellor’s office.

Rhodes University spokesperson, Catherine Beiner reportedly said the institution would not tolerate racism.

The sit-in comes at a time when the university is hosting the Highway Africa conference, one of the biggest annual gatherings of African journalists. News24
