Police have arrested and charged 120 people with public violence after protests in Isithebe, northern KwaZulu-Natal, turned violent on Monday.
“The protests turned violent today [Monday] when four factories, a truck, two vehicles and five containers were set alight,” police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.
They damaged police vehicles and stole eight computers from one factory’s offices. Two of them were recovered.
More police had been deployed to the area and the situation remained tense.
“A total of 120 suspects were arrested and charged with public violence, arson and malicious damage to property.”
More arrests were expected.
Zwane said earlier that residents were apparently protesting over the renomination of an ex-mayor for the upcoming local government elections.
