A former security guard accused of being behind the spate of murders committed in and around the Century City area, on Thursday entered a plea agreement in the Western Cape High Court.
He was sentenced to seven life sentences, and an additional 40 years behind bars.
Khangayi Sedumedi, 32, of Gugulethu, was arrested following a series of kidnapping, robberies, rapes and murders committed between 2011 and 2015 in and around Century City, Kensington and Acacia Park.
Four victims were murdered. One of them still remains unidentified.
According to the State, seven women – one of them a 15-year-old girl – fell victim to Sedumedi.
The teenager was dragged into the bushes near Acre Road, Kensington, in January 2013, where she was raped, sodomised and assaulted.
In some cases, he contacted his victims by phone and promised them jobs.
Arrest
Sedumedi was arrested on January 7 last year, a day after the murder of Sinazo Ntlaka. The woman was robbed and killed in the same bushes as the teenage victim.
The cause of her death was never determined.
Upon his arrest, Sedumedi was found in possession of some of his victims’ belongings.
DNA and cellphone records also linked him to the 23 charges.
He pleaded guilty to 21 charges, and two were withdrawn.
Sedumedi was declared unfit to possess a firearm and will be entered into the sexual offenders registry, Judge John Hlophe ordered.
