Capetonians will be up at the crack of dawn on Sunday for the ever-popular, Cape Town 10km Big Walk, which is expected to draw 20 000 participants. Big Walk director Dr Ilyaaz Parker says late entries will be open to those seeking not to miss out on the largest community walk in Cape Town. The Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk 2016 presented by Spur, takes place on Sunday, 28 February 2016, at 07:30am.

There are two distances, a 5km route and the more popular 10km route. With the start in Vlei Road opposite Cape Town Stadium, the scenic route makes its way along Sea Point promenade and finishes inside the Green Point track.

A medal, ice-cream and cooldrink are handed to each finisher. The finish line and area is a hive of activity, with food on sale and a jam-packed lineup of entertainment and prize giveaways to entertain and invigorate the crowd.

“People can stand the chance to win Iphones, Flat Screens, 2 airline tickets, 2 android tablets, busary to the value of R12 000 spionsored by the College of Cape Town, walking shoes from Tekkie Town and mountain bikes sponsored by Dragon Gas,” says Parker.

Being deemed by Top Events as the 3rd biggest sporting event in Cape Town, the spirit of giving back has always been at the heart of the Cape Town Walk. Since its inception in 2000, the Big Walk committee have raised funds for Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Academia Library for over 16 years.

This year the funds raised by the Big Walk Committee will be allocated to building a new radiology department which currently is split between 3 floors and 3 sites, and together with the space limitations, negatively affects the efficiency of the dedicated teams and compromises the flow of the ever increasing patient load.

Proceeds from entries will assist in providing much-needed funding for beneficiaries that match the Cape Town Walk’s pillars of education fitness and health. Donations to the Cape Town Big Walk Foundation can be made with entries.

Race registration is set to take place on Thursday, 25 February between 5pm- 9pm, Friday, 26 February between 5pm-9pm and Saturday, 27 February 10am-2pm at the College of Cape Town Crawford Campus where participants can collect their race numbers. Food and refreshments will be on sale at the expo.
