Belhar family could be evicted soon

After sharing the story of a Belhar family caught in the vicious web of poverty, VOC received an overwhelming response from members of the public interesting in assisting. From calls, smses to Facebook posts, Nashrullah Leonard says that following her interview on the Voice of the Cape she’s been overcome by the outpouring of support.

“Alhamdulilah people have been calling us and checking up on us and it is such a good feeling to see so many people wanting to help us. I want to say shukran to everyone who has contributed. People who have just pension money have come to support us,” said a very teary Leonard.

However this family’s struggle does not end there. Leonard has said that they have been evicted from the wendy house that the family occupies in Belhar.

“We have been asked to leave the place. We have a few days but we have to find something soon. I am looking for something but I can’t afford the rent because we still trying to put money together for Jehaan’s operation.”

Jehaan, Leonards youngest is two and half years old and is battling numerous health challenges since she was born. She is need of a bone marrow transplant and the family has been unable to raise the funds. Leonard has said that right now her concern is not even about where her family will stay because she is so worried about Jehaan’s condition.

“I am pleading to people to please help us give Jehaan a normal life. We have an account for her if you can contribute directly into our account and please assist us in any way,” begged a desperate Leonard.

The family gets income only from the disability grant that Leonard gets as well the child social grants. Her husband Tasreeq is currently unemployed and they have two other girls, Nishaat and Aaliya. Leonard often has to walk to Tygerberg hospiotal with her child as they often do not have the money to take transport.

If you would like to contribute in anyway financially or even with food items, contact Nashrullah on 084 556 2635 to find out how you can assist them.
