Boland Summer Festival in full swing

This April, Paarl will be transformed into a sea of festivities as the 17th annual Boland Summer Festival begins. The festival, which is hosted by the Paarl Muslim Jamaah, will provide a range of entertainment for all ages.

The Paarl Muslim Jamaah boasts a 50-year history of unity, inclusive of over 1000 families who fall under one imam. The Jamaah began the festival as a predominantly “Muslim event”, and today has transformed it into a multicultural and religiously vibrant sea of festivities.

The growth of the festival became evident in 2015 when the Dal Josafat Stadium proved too small to host the vast number of attendees; the festival attracts approximately 25 000 people.

Convenor of the event, Ebrahim Patel, explained that the funds raised from the festival will be directed toward maintaining the masjid, Salah khaanas, the high school, the primary school, the Welfare and Zakah Office, the imaams office, the madaaris, and eight soap kitchens.

The festival, Patel affirms, is to a large extent run by community members who volunteer their time and resources to assist in making the event a success. The Boland festival is, therefore, run by the community, for the community.

“The festival provides entertainment for everyone – for the ladies, the children and the men – that is what makes it a success,” Patel asserted.

“I need to thank the organizers of the festival, Broadway Hardware, Coca-Cola, Drakenstein Municipality, Paarl Post, Good Hope Meat Market, Market Toyota, and the Voice of the Cape Radio, for making the event a success,” Patel stated.

The entertainment that will be hosted at the festival includes; a Friday night special with Joe barber’s Oscar Peterson, Tolla van die Kaap, Alen the singing car guard, as well as car spinning.

On the ground, the festival will provide sports lovers with an exciting rugby match and a paint ball range.
