A child’s body washed up near Clifton’s First Beach in Cape Town on Wednesday morning, Western Cape police confirmed.
Two members of the public saw the body floating in shallow water at about 07:45 and recovered it from the sea, said police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.
Due to its decomposed state, he could not confirm if the body was that of a boy who recently went missing from the same beach.
On New Year’s Day, the National Sea Rescue Institute said a police dive unit was searching for a 10-year-old child from Gugulethu who was swept out to sea at Clifton.
“DNA will have to be collected and compared with a relative of the missing person,” said Van Wyk.
An inquest docket was opened. News24
