A Western Cape ward councillor’s house as well as two cars and a number of shacks were burnt down in a protest over housing at the weekend.
A group of around 200 Paarl East residents had allegedly taken part in an illegal march in the area late on Friday evening and were subsequently dispersed, said provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.
“The crowd later reformed in front of the councillor’s house where petrol bombs were thrown.”
He said a 26-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning for allegedly throwing the bombs.
The man was charged with arson and public violence.
The scene was “very quiet and calm” on Sunday, with police officers present.
