A collective sigh of relief swept through the Hangberg Community Centre on Tuesday after reports were received that missing Byron Baron had been found.
The 7-year-old boy is understood to have been discovered by local residents hiding under a boat parked near his Rodevos Street home.
It is unclear why he had been hiding there, family members told News24 on Tuesday.
His aunt, Beulynn Salmans, said the family is grateful he is alive and well as they had feared the worst.
“He is only a little boy. When he didn’t come home yesterday [on Monday] we thought something terrible had happened to him,” she said.
Search parties made up of concerned residents had been looking for the child since Monday afternoon.
According to missing children’s organisation, the Pink Ladies, Byron left his grandmother’s house to visit his other grandmother, who also lives in the area, at about 16:00. He was later spotted by locals about a kilometre from his home at around 20:00.
Flanked by his two grandmothers, Byron – in the same black and yellow hooded top, maroon pants, blue T-shirt and grey and purple Vans takkies he was last seen wearing – followed them into the police station shortly after 13:00.
“He has a lot of explaining to do. But that will be sorted out later. We are just glad he is okay,” Salmans said. News24
