Mitchell’s Plain police are still on the prowl for the suspects behind Thursday’s cash in transit heist at the busy Liberty Promenade mall. The shopping centre was left rattled after four suspects stripped a bank on the premises.

Promenade’s centre management said four armed men fled with an undisclosed amount of cash from Standard Bank in Liberty Promenade at 11:10am on Thursday. The criminals assaulted security guards after they delivered money to the bank. No tenants or customers sustained any injuries.

“Four unidentified armed suspects robbed two security guards who were delivering money to the bank. The suspects fled the scene in a white Corolla with an undisclosed amount of cash and two firearms,” says police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana.

The centre’s management has taken security measures to secure the mall and will be trading as usual.

“The centre has been secured and the mall is trading as normal,” said Nomzamo Radebe, the CEO for JHI Properties, which owns the mall.

One retail outlet disclosed that centre management informed all stores about the incident and urged them to be vigilant.

“We all got emails telling us how the men look and where the robbery happened just so we can look out for any suspicious activities,” said the shop manager, who asked not to be named.

To ensure the safety of all its tenants and consumers, Liberty Promenade’s Centre Management will be working closely with Mitchells Plain police.

“The safety and security of shoppers and tenants is of the utmost importance to Liberty Promenade Shopping Centre Management and they are working with the SAPS to assist them with the investigation,” says Radebe.

An investigation is under way. VOC
