Employees at a top jewellery store in Cavendish Square in Claremont were left traumatised after a gang of men brandishing heavy weaponry robbed the store on Tuesday.

A witness, Clive, who was working in a shop opposite the jewellery store, Trigg Jewellers, said police were speaking to employees who “looked very traumatised”. He said he had heard at least two gunshots being fired and that 15 suspects were involved.

The gang took jewellery from the display area in front of the shop and then ran into the shop and took more items, Clive said.

All the gang members managed to escape.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a case of armed robbery has been opened for investigation.

The centre’s manager, Brenda Bibby, confirmed the robbery had taken place but said only seven robbers were involved and that no shots were fired.  News24
