The man who made allegations on Facebook that late Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane was assassinated was released on a warning by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Thembani Chabane, who reportedly claimed to be a relative of the late minister, was released by Magistrate Mohamed Shaik on a warning until May 7, for further investigation.

“If you don’t come back to court, you will be arrested,” Shaik told him.

Limpopo police said Chabane was initially taken in for questioning on Wednesday.

“Initially when he put the messages on Facebook we opened an inquiry, but after discussions with the senior prosecutor it was decided that the inquiry should be changed to criminal charges,” Colonel Ronel Otto said.

Chabane and two bodyguards, Sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane, were killed when a truck allegedly made a U-turn in front of their car on the N1 near Polokwane in Limpopo last month.

The truck driver, Amukelani Rikhotso, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and was granted R5 000 bail. News24
