An Uber taxi driver who witnessed the shooting at the BP garage just outside the Cape Town International Airport on Wednesday told News24 he was standing outside his car at the garage when a Toyota Tazz pulled up behind a cigarette delivery vehicle.

“They pointed guns at the delivery men and took the boxes of cigarettes. But a few minutes later a security van pulled up and opened fire,” he said.

Petrol attendants ran in all directions as the shots were fired. “One guy was shot dead,” the man added, pointing to a covered body.

A second man was shot through the leg, and another escaped on foot, he said.

Chaos erupted at the garage just before 11:30 when security guards fired shots at the suspects just as they were reversing to leave the garage.

Another eyewitness, Andie Morris, earlier told News24 she was completely taken by surprise when the shots started ringing out.

Morris described it as “the most fearful” she has ever been in her life, as the car being shot at was parked right next to hers. She was biding her time at the garage, waiting to pick up a colleague from the airport.

Fidelity Guards have since confirmed their guards reacted to the robbery taking place at the garage.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a shootout ensued between the suspects and security officers earlier this afternoon.

“One of the suspects was fatally wounded, one was injured and the other one fled the scene and is still at large,” he said.

“Our members are still on the scene.” News24
