The City of Cape Town has approved an additional 170-million-rand for additional security to prevent land grabs.

Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Malusi Booi, says they’ve experienced a significant spike in land occupations since the start of the national lockdown last year.

He says the occupations have mostly happened on unsuitable land near dams, ponds and wetlands. Booi says the practice has led to the establishment of 54 new settlements across the metro.
