Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans has called for an urgent review of security at all military bases around the country.

The call comes after the theft of high calibre rifles from a military base in Harare, Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats.

Six rifles were stolen after five armed men over-powered the soldiers on guard.

Late last year, a similar incident took place at the Simon’s Town Naval Base.

The committee’s chairperson, Malusi Motimele, says they have requested the Defence Department for a report on the robbery.
“We are going to call the Department because we did not as yet get a full report from the department. We will call the department to give us a full report as to what really happened and as to what steps are in place to make sure this kind of theft and robbery does not recur in our bases.”
