Controversial Boksburg top cop promoted to Hawks

A controversial Boksburg station commander, who was alleged to have been running a dodgy loan shark business from the police station’s premises, has been promoted to the position of acting head of the Organised Crime Unit of the Hawks in Johannesburg.

Colonel Woolganathan ‘Biggs’ Govender was alleged to have joined the Hawks at the beginning of the year.

“He is on an acting capacity and was brought in by the previous acting head,” said Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Govender was alleged to have faced a SA Police Service disciplinary hearing late last year where he was questioned about his alleged dealings.

This came after News24 published an article alleging Govender was a ruthless loan shark who charged exorbitant interest rates.

At least two people who had borrowed money from Govender claimed to have fallen prey to his alleged schemes.

It was alleged Govender demanded payment sooner than expected and when the men failed to pay up, he repossessed their vehicles. He had kept the documents as collateral for the loans.

‘Useless and corrupt’

At the time, News24 approached Govender for comment. He told News24 that he was the victim in the matter. He claimed to have been financially helping out the men, whom he regarded as friends, but they failed to pay him back.

The SAPS disciplinary hearing took place in October last year. Since then, News24 had attempted numerous times to get a response from Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini on the outcomes of the disciplinary hearing. To date, no response has been received.

Besides the disciplinary hearing, Govender was also hauled to the courts on harassment charges. His lawyer, Frikkie van As, told News24 that the case against his client had been dismissed.

During his reign as station commander of the Boksburg Police Station, police officers from his station had demonstrated against him outside the police station, calling for his immediate removal.

They accused him of being “useless and corrupt”.
