The DA on Wednesday called on Umalusi to provide more information about the matric exam copying in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

“Why did it take Umalusi auditors to ‘discover’ this fiasco?” Democratic Alliance MP Annette Lovemore asked in a statement.

“Umalusi was previously very vocal about the need for competency tests for markers. They appear to have dropped this fight. They need to explain why,” she said.

On Tuesday, assessment monitoring body Umalusi said evidence of “group copying” was found in 58 examination centres in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. It appeared someone had dictated answers, some incorrect, to pupils.

Lovemore said more information was needed on how assessment centres were audited, and what would happen to pupils caught cheating and the supervisors who apparently helped them do so.

She called on Umalusi to release its annual technical report to the basic education department (DBE), which was usually kept confidential.
