The DA says it will not drop its court case scheduled for today to have beaches along the Garden Route in the Southern Cape reopened.

This is despite government announcing that a new variant of the coronavirus is driving the second wave of the pandemic. The matter is due to be heard in the High Court in Cape Town.

DA Shadow Minister for Health, Siviwe Gwarube says they are concerned about the economy of the Garden Route, particularly the livelihoods of people working in the hospitality and tourism industries:
“We are of the view that the only way to beat this resurgence, this different lineage of the Covid-19 pandemic remain the same that we needed to do during the first wave that is why we are of the view that if we can save as many jobs as possible by reinvigorating the tourism industry and keeping the tourism industry in coastal towns then we must do so.”
