A 19 year old student’s body was found on the University of the Western Cape’s campus in Bellville on Monday. At 7.45am, Thobela Rinstana was covered up by cleaners and security in the computer lab of the campus. A student in the science department of geology, Rintsana barely got to see the completion of his first year.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of this first year student,” said UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo.

The cause of the death remains unknown.

“There were no signs of foul play,” says Tyhalibongo.

However, police are still investigating the incident and as a result, they cannot give any further details.

“An inquest docket was opened to further investigate the circumstances around his death,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk.

The affected family and friends are being provided counselling. Plans for a memorial service are under way. VOC (Nailah Cornelissen)
