Motorists should expect long delays on the road this week due to the end-of-holiday traffic rush, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said on Monday.

More than 1 000 vehicles an hour were passing points along the country’s major roads, including the N3 and N1, spokesperson Simon Zwane said.

Over 1 400 vehicles an hour were recorded going through the Mooi River toll plaza on the N3 at noon.

The situation on the N1 and N3 on Monday was a bit calmer compared to Sunday, he said.

“Traffic is flowing nicely at the moment and there are no incidents to report,” said Zwane.

Traffic on the N8 from Lesotho into the Free State was also heavy. The three roads were expected to remain busy ahead of schools reopening next week.

On Sunday, more than 2 000 vehicles an hour passed through the Kranskop toll plaza on the N1 south in Limpopo. Some motorists got impatient.

“Motorists wanted to use the e-toll lanes, because the lanes were moving a bit faster than the paying cash lanes, so that was very chaotic, but they quickly moved to their respective lanes.”

One lane on the N1 north from Kranskop to Polokwane was closed to accommodate traffic going south. News24
