An “extreme downpour” has led to flooding in parts of Cape Town, affecting several hundred people in informal settlements, the city’s disaster risk management centre said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Charlotte Powell said assessments were being done at informal settlements in Khayelitsha, Strand, and Gugulethu.

“No emergency sheltering has been activated,” she said.

At the Nkanana settlement in Gugulethu, 480 people living in 120 structures had received flood kits and other help.

In Strand, 200 people in 50 structures at Solly’s Town were helped, while 300 people living in 80 structures at New Village were also affected by the heavy rains.

“Our NGO partners will be providing humanitarian relief, with hot meals, blankets and clothing,” Powell said.

While the downpour continues in some parts of the city, no rain has been forecast for the rest of the week. News24
