Farewell, Thabiet

The VOC family is mourning the lost one of its brightest personalities, colleague and friend Thabiet Slamang. Thabiet passed away during the early hours of Friday morning after a sudden illness. Thabiet joined VOC in September 2002, after a stint in night radio with the station’s Community Forum (CF). Thabiet is the only son of Abdullah Slamang, well known in the Grassy Park community as a death registrar and members of VOC’s CF.

While Thabiet has made a huge impact within the station by snatching up major corporate clients, for VOC listeners, he is most well known as the brain behind the hugely successful Ramadan Make a Difference (MAD) campaign. Thabiet was widely considered amongst VOC staff as the most dynamic sales consultant at the station. Both staff and listeners know him as a warm and easy going person, always willing to assist where possible.

Speaking after his janaazah in Grassy Park on Friday afternoon, VOC sales consultant and presenter, Muhammad Zain Majiet, described him as a resilient individual, always determined “to make the deal happen.” Majiet said he would greatly be missed, both in the sales department, and within the VOC community as a whole.

“He was our top salesman…so we are really going to miss him. Upstairs in the sales department we were seriously like a family, and today we’ve lost a member of that family. But that is the will of Allah,” he said.

An emotional Hassiem Bastra, who started in the sales department on the same day as Thabiet, gave a heartfelt tribute.

“We both started as business developers, and over the years we developed a strong client base. And just reflecting back over the 12 years, which went by so quickly, I still can’t believe that this has happened,” he related.

“We must have sabr and make dua that Allah will give him Janaah, inshallah,” he said.

He leaves behind his wife Gaironiesa and two sons.

We make dua that Allah (swt) grant the deceased Jannah Ameen and place sabr in the hearts of his family, Ameen. VOC (Mubeen Banderker)
