A blaze has gutted parts of Hilite Textile and Curtaining Job Buyers in Belgravia road in Athlone on Friday morning. The blaze started at about 4am and swept through the factory shop, damaging fabrics.
“We got the news that the fire had started at the ‘R5 shop’ next door. When we got there, two fire brigades were there and it was difficult to douse the fire. The whole place is guttered,” said Hilite owner Yusuf Mohamed, better known as ‘Joe Hilite’.
Mohamed said the fire became “uncontrollable” as the fabrics are easily flammable.
“The whole building and the stock has been damaged.”
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was contained to the dispatch and warehouse storage area that sustained significant damage to the structure. Most of the contents in the storage area was destroyed. The shop’s sales area sustained smoke damage only.
“No injuries were sustained as the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The cause has not been determined as yet,” said spokesperson Theo Layne.
Four fire engines and 24 firefighters are still on the scene. Mopping up operations has now begun. VOC
