Firefighters worked through the night to contain a blaze on the mountains above Simon’s Town, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services said on Thursday.

The fire began on Wednesday afternoon, fanned by strong winds and high temperatures. By Thursday morning it was still burning high up on the slopes of the mountain, said Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne.

“The South African Navy will be sending out two helicopters” in an effort to douse the flames, Layne said.

The fire was burning in an area that was difficult for firefighters to reach, he said.

“The fire isn’t exactly contained.”

However, the blaze posed no immediate danger to property and the wind is also blowing in a direction opposite to homes, Layne said.

Firefighters from Table Mountain National Park, Working on Fire and Volunteer Wildfire Services all responded to the blaze. News24
