Four men arrested in connection with an armed robbery that ended in a bloody shoot-out at Primrose Markette in Surrey Estate, are due in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The men were arrested after the shop was hit on Monday, police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said.
They face charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
The men are between the ages of 32 and 39.
“The 32-year-old suspect is currently under police guard in hospital,” Van Wyk said, confirming that the suspect had been shot in the foot.
Shoot-out
Witnesses on Tuesday told News24 the suspect had been hit on the corner of Jupiter Road, with one saying the suspect’s toe “literally fell off” when his shoe was removed.
The bloody takkie was still on the scene on Monday morning.
Three of the robbers died in the shootout.
A resident who was waiting in her car and who got caught in the crossfire, is recovering in hospital.
The woman was shot twice in the arm and twice in the legs after being accosted by the robbers.
She had been waiting for her passenger in the parked car when she was told to get out of the vehicle by a gunman.
A warrant officer hit in the shoot-out is also reportedly recovering in hospital.
‘This doesn’t happen here’
On Wednesday morning, Surrey Estate residents said they were rattled that such a violent incident had taken place so close to home.
“This is the type of thing that happens in Manenberg, not here,” one elderly homeowner said.
“It’s so upsetting to think that I could have popped into the shop when the skollies struck. My word! It’s deeply unsettling.”
Another resident told News24 that while they are no strangers to property-related crime, “shoot-outs are definitely not the norm here”.
The incident is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. News24
