The case against four City of Cape Town licensing officials, accused of fraud and corruption, has been postponed for further investigation.

The council employees appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning. They were appearing for more than 100 cases between them relating to the issuing of fraudulent licensing discs during licence renewals, primarily to taxi owners who had been blocked with the admin mark.

The mark is assigned to drivers who have warrants of arrest, preventing them from renewing their licences or vehicle registrations on the eNatis system.

The accused allegedly found a way to circumvent this. However, an investigation by the City in conjunction with the police traced these transactions on the system, which stretched as far back as 2013.

In July, three of the clerks were arrested at the City of Cape Town’s Civic Centre offices while a fourth official, who had been on sick leave, was arrested at his home.

It is believed that at least R100 000 was pocketed though this practice.
