Government would explore various options to meet the commitment made by President Jacob Zuma when he announced a 0% increase in university fees in 2016, the Presidency said in a statement on Sunday.

Spokesperson Bongani Majola said each university would be engaged to ensure that practical effect is given to the spirit of the agreement.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between government, university vice chancellors, council chairpersons and student leaders on October 23 at the Union Buildings during the #FeesMustFall campaign.

Majola said an announcement will be made once the consultation processes have been concluded.

“President Zuma is currently exploring the establishment of a formal commission of inquiry to look into the matter. He said due regard would be given to existing studies that have been undertaken in the field of transformation of higher education, including broadening access for students from poor households,” said Majola.

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande was expected to announce government’s plan to make up for the shortfall as a result on no increases, but he then said he would be waiting for Zuma to return from overseas before any announcements were made.  News24
