Every year, millions of Muslims from the four corners of the world head to Makkah to perform Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam.

The journey needs dedication, energy and a lot of patience, as millions of pilgrims move together in groups for around one week between five locations in Makkah and its surroundings.

Though easier today than what is used to be a few decades ago, the Hajj rituals demand that pilgrims are organized and in a state of peace and serenity to please God, and to be rewarded for their effort.

Prophet Muhammad said:

“The reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing but Paradise.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

While performing Hajj, pilgrims remember special events in the lives of Prophet Abraham, Lady Hajar, and Prophet Ishmael, peace be upon them, which took place many centuries ago in these same locations.

Allah (SWT) tells Prophet Abraham in the Quran:

{And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass. That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days…} (Quran 22:27-28)

The following infographic summarizes the main steps of Tamattu’ Hajj in a simple and clear way.

Pilgrims performing Tamattu’ Hajj first perform Umrah upon arrival in Makkah, as detailed in this infographic.

They then end their state of ihram, and wait in Makkah till the 8th. or 9th. day of the month of Dhul Hijjah, when they start the rituals of Hajj, as summarized in the following 17 steps.
