Preparations are underway for the State of the Nation Address at the Cape Town City Hall this Thursday. Meanwhile, yesterday marked 25 years since the South African Constitution became law. This year’s theme is “We the people of South Africa’’: Recognizing the supremacy of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. Among others, Justice minister Ronald Lamola called for crime, unemployment, and violence against women and children to receive extra attention. Acting chief justice Raymond Zondo also admitted that the country is battling a corruption problem.
Alleged arsonist Zandile Mafe’s appeal of his bail sentence has been turned down in court. According to Senior State Advocate Mervyn Menigo Mafe’s alleged setting of Parliament alight, flows from deeply held political, ideological and philosophical beliefs and intense resentment of the South African government. The State argued that the 49 year old is a flight risk and he has since been remanded in custody until Friday.
