Addressing media, IEC’s Courtney Sampson says that while the election process has a number of phases, the voting phase for the 2016 Local Elections has officially been concluded and that the IEC has secured all results slips at the capturing sites. The Final stage of capturing of the results is currently underway.
He said that it is first time in the Western Cape that on the morning after election day that all results slips are secured.
“It might have something to do with careful planning, but it may also have something to do with the fact that voting stations closed two hours earlier,” Sampson noted.
While 6968 candidates were listed on ballots, only 914 seats are available. Candidates have, therefore, been waiting in suspense as the results are being concluded.
The IEC is currently submitting results of municipalities that have already been concluded. Below is the latest results.
Election staff has worked through the night to complete the process, but appear to be in high spirits as the final phase is being concluded.
“The staff is exceptionally tired, so we have said to them to take their time and produce quality work,” Sampson continued.
