Amid a flood of queries over the halal consumption of McDonald’s, the Muslim Judicial Council Halal Trust (MJCHT) has participated in a public awareness campaign launched by the South African franchise on Youtube. The video was launched in May as part of the fast-food chain’s “Know our Food” campaign.
In the video, MJCHT director Shaykh Achmat Sedick explains the processes followed, in order for all McDonald’s ingredients to be given the halal stamp of approval. The video depicts the chain of production – from manufacturing, supply to story delivery. Inspectors from the MJCHT also conduct regular monthly inspections at the company’s plant and outlets to ensure these checks and balances remain in place.
The video campaign comes amid renewed rumours that the halal certification of McDonald’s SA had been withdrawn by the MJC. Two weeks ago, the Trust confirmed it had renewed their halal certification for 2015.
For years, various hoax emails have been recirculated stating that McDonalds is not fit for Muslim consumption. One particular email circulated last year claimed that pork substances were used in McDonald’s sauces.
The MJCHT has confirmed that all ingredients are received from halal certified central distribution centres. The franchisor does not produce any products.
