Islamic New Year welcomed with mass gathering

Hundreds of Muslims converged to Cape Town to attend the “Mass Dhikr” that marks the start of the new Islamic Year (1437), a now annual gathering organised by the Habibia Soofie Masjid and considered one of the largest Muharram Dhikr gatherings in Cape Town. Saturday 17 October 2015 was the day when many different Sufi Tariqahs joint together for the Mass Dhikr in Rylands at the Habibia Masjid.

The Event began with the Performance of salatul Esha led by Qari Saad Kazi, followed by the welcome address by Shaykh Faizel Firfirey and Moulana Luqman Kagee moving onto an opening dua, which led to the beginning of the dhikr recitals led by groups belonging to different Tariqahs. Some of the participating groups included the Tijani Brothers, Naqshabandi Brothers, Qadri Shadhli, Chishty, Alawi Hussaini Ninowy & Ba Alawi’s.

A mood of spirituality and serenity prevailed inside the gathering with most of the men dressed in white clothes and addressing each other as brothers while the hearts were focused on the beautiful praises, the community was fortunate to sit in a gathering within close proximity of many great shuyookh. Special guests from Durban, Hazrat Saad Kazi & the melodious naat reciter, Hafez Rashid Kazi also graced the gathering with their attendance.

Shuyukh and members from different organizations were present including, Masjidul Jummah Milnerton, Madina Institute, Masjidul Quds, Masjidul Kareem, CTIEC Ulama Board, Tableview Islamic Centre, and Madina Musallahs amongst others.

Shaykh Fakhruddin Owaisi mentioned that “It was a gathering of souls before being a gathering of bodies, indeed an evening of love and light”. He further praised the organisers for holding such an event.

Principal of CTIEC, Moulana Sayed Imraan Ziyaee said the Dhikr shared a piece of mutual advice that all Tariqahs have in common “Send Praises upon Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) in abundance”. Attendees were heard repeatedly sending salawat upon our Beloved Nabi (PBUH) during the night.

Social Media has seen a stream of positive vibes coming out from the event. Many users on Facebook and Instagram shared pictures of the Mass Dhikr with an attached positive message and shared their feelings about the Dhikr, while also advising their social circles to attend events of this nature.

The aim of the Mass Dhikr was to have a positive impact on the youth while also giving opportunity to strengthen the bonds between the different Tariqahs, to instill the Love and brotherhood within the community. it is evident from the attendees that the Dhikr has impacted many and its purpose has been fulfilled.

“If we keep busy with Dhikr of Allah, happiness and peace will be granted to us. Dhikr is the key to happiness, the key to joy, and the key to Divine Love, The Habibia Soofie Masjid has given us a spiritual and blessed way to the start of the New year 1437” added Shaykh Sayed Ridhwaan Mohamed Ziyaee.

The gathering was concluded with a selection of beautiful Qasaid, the Ba Alawi Group concluded the spiritual gathering with Salaam and the Dua was recited by Imam Goolam of Habibia Soofie Masjid.
