A Johanneburg couple will attempt to summit the highest peak in Africa, Kilimanjaro at the end of August 2015. However, Abubakr and Fahmeedah Nadat have seized the opportunity to use their journey as an initiative to raise awareness and money to help rebuild Palestine and assist the thousands displaced in Syria. In light of this, the two have now teamed up with the Wings of Mercy Foundation, with whom they’ve previously travelled with to Palestine.

“We wanted to make this more than just a climb. We’ve teamed with the foundation because we’ve been with them to Palestine before and we’ve seen the work that they do there,” said Abubakr.

The project stemmed from a thought his wife had some years ago when she heard of a friend who wanted to make the trek up with the mountain. Ever since then, her mind had been set on taking on the challenge.

“We thought that through this venture of ours, people can become more aware and informed of the dire conditions which so many Palestinians and Syrians are living under. All the funds will be going directly to the two projects which we have chosen,” Abubakr continued.

“The Gaza relief project serves to assist residents in Gaza who are struggling to get by on a daily basis. It’s been one year since last year’s devastating war and many people do not have the basic necessities to survive. At the same time, the Syria project serves to support Syrians displaced by the current violence, living at Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. They also need basic necessities to survive.”
