Mandatory vaccine policies within the workplace are once again a hot topic, after the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) ruled in favour of the Gold Rush Group for dismissing an employee for not taking the Covid-19 vaccine.
A Belhar man was recently fired for the same reason. While Theresa Mulderij argued that she was well within her human rights to refuse the jab, the CCMA differed, saying that the company’s actions were ‘fair’.
Speaking to VOC Breakfast, Dr Naseeba Kathrada disputed this, adding the ruling should be reviewed given the latest evidence about the vaccine. Dr Kathrada says the argument of many companies that unvaccinated employees ‘pose a risk’ to staff and clients is fundamentally flawed.
