A grandson of late former president Nelson Mandela, accused of raping an underage girl, also faces an assault charge, according to a report on Sunday.

According to Eyewitness News, an assault case was opened at the Norwood police station by a 41-year-old woman, after the grandson allegedly assaulted her earlier this month.

A police spokesperson told the broadcaster a case had been opened, with the investigation ongoing.

Regarding the grandson’s rape case, he was granted bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old man, who may not be named until he has pleaded, was released on R7 000 bail.

He was alleged to have raped a teenage girl at a pub in Greenside, Johannesburg earlier this month. While the accused has not yet pleaded, he has maintained that he and the complainant had consensual sex. News24
