The Hawks have launched a manhunt for a third suspect in connection with the R17m theft in foreign currencies at the State Security Agency.

Two other people have already appeared in court in connection with the crime. Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said police were offering a reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the man.

“Members of the public are urged to inform the police about his whereabouts and to not attempt to apprehend him as he is believed to be dangerous. A substantial reward will be offered to anyone who will tip off the police about the whereabouts of this most wanted man,” said Mulaudzi.

Anyone with information about the theft was urged to contact Colonel Tolie Vreugdengburg on 082 451 7226, or Colonel Makasela Nkuna on 082 565 8506, or the nearest police station.

The case against two State Security Agency (SSA) employees implicated in the theft was postponed in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

William Mmotong, a driver, and Khayalethu Mgatyelwa, a security guard, made a brief appearance before the matter was postponed to February 18 for further investigation.

Mmotong entered the court wearing a hoodie and covering his mouth to try and avoid being photographed. He waved to the packed gallery when he left the courtroom.

The men allegedly stole millions in foreign currency from a safe at the agency’s Pretoria headquarters between Christmas and Boxing Day.

Mgatyelwa was out on R5 000 bail and Mmotong remained in custody. He was expected to apply for bail on January 25. News24
