Maths left out in WCape matric exam timetable

An official matric exam timetable for Western Cape pupils mistakenly excludes certain scheduled exams, according to documents seen by News24. The timetable has already been distributed to matriculants across the province, but fails to include the scheduled exams of key subjects such as Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy.

The provincial education department sent an e-mail to principals last week, informing them of the mistake. In it, the department apologised for the error and asked principals to alert their matrics. Matrics write the National Senior Certificate in October.

A “final timetable” distributed in April, and seen by News24, included the Maths exams for November 2. However, schools later received a full-colour 52-page “Matric Revision Countdown 2015” publication, dated July 2015, where all the exams for November 2 were omitted.

The publication included examples of exam papers with memorandums, study tips and guidelines, and answers to frequently asked questions. On the last page of the publication, a study plan template was included with the NSC exam timetable for October/November on the back.

A note recommended that pupils cut the page out and use the template and timetable in conjunction. The latest circular to principals included an attachment with the correct timetable. Exams to be written on November 2 are:

– Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy P2 (09:00)

– Religion Studies P1 (14:00)

– Arabic, French, Italian and Spanish SAL P1 (14:00)

– Latin P1 (14:00)

– Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, HL, FAL and SAL P1 (14:00)

The department indicated it would respond to the matter on Tuesday.
