Mayor fencesitting on Gaza: Cosatu

Cosatu in the Western Cape has labelled Mayor Patricia De Lille as an “embarrassment”, following a mass march in support of Gaza in the city last week. Provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich said the questions surrounding the conflict in the Middle East, is well known across the world and is a topical point of discussion at the moment.

“It was highlighted by more than 30 000 marching from communities of Cape Town,” said Ehrenreich, adding that this matter cannot be ignored.

As the first citizen of the City of Cape Town, the mayor must declare her position on important events of public interest.

Ehrenreich said the Mayor has said nothing about both the atrocities against the Palestinians in Gaza, neither about the march of thousands of people against these atrocities and the call for social justice.

“The only reasons we can come to for the Mayor’s silence is that she is being bought by the Zionists, who funded her election campaign, when she was in the ID and who now fund the election campaign of the DA,” said Ehrenreich.

Ehrenreich emphasised that it is completely unacceptable that Cape Town does not take a stand on the side of justice. Ehrenreich added that the Mayor not only embarrassed herself politically but the people of Cape Town and the sentiments of Captonians, in respect of where they stand on the aggression by the Israeli state against the people of Palestine.

The office of the Mayor had not yet replied to the statement at the time of going to press. VOC (Imogen Vollenhoven)

  1. The silence of the DA was deafening. Ironically this speaks volumes on the stance of the party as a whole. The S’African people opposed to this Apartheid Zionist massacre should reply to the DA with their votes during the next provincial elections, I hope the DA’s current silence will still be remembered when it come to the next polls.
