The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has warned against a scam doing the rounds on Facebook, using the name of the organisation and asking for funds on behalf of president Maulana Igsaan Hendricks.

Hendricks said that they were alerted during the course of this week, that a Facebook page had been opened in the name of the MJC and the ulema body’s president.

“Attached to that is the appeal for funds. We are unaware of what the nature of the funds is for. Some of our close friends and close associates picked it up and alerted us straight away,” said Hendricks.

One of the people who alerted them to the issue said when he called the number provided by the unknown scammers, they asked that the money be paid into a bank account.

This individual found it suspicious and called the MJC with the information. Hendricks said the MJC have never solicited any money in this manner from anyone and warned the public against donating funds.

“It is a hoax and a fraudulent initiative against the MJC that we have been aware of for the last 4 days. We do not know for how long this has been going on or if any monies were solicited from any of our associates or acquaintances.” VOC (Imogen Vollenhoven)
