South African Broadcasting Company (SABC) COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng has received a pay increase of almost R1m in the last year, the Democratic Alliance (DA) reported on Wednesday.

His salary increased from R2.872m to R3.784m in this financial year, DA MP Gavin Davis said.

He said the R912 000 pay rise included a R279 000 bonus.

The information was revealed when the SABC annual report was tabled in parliament.

The party was outraged by Motsoeneng’s pay hike and said it would call on public protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate.

“There can be no justification for Motsoeneng’s salary to increase 31% in one year. In comparison, other workers in the public sector such as nurses, teachers and police officers received a 7% increase over the same period,” Davis said.

“It should be remembered Motsoeneng was earning just R334 000 as an SABC radio producer in 2010. Five years later and his salary has increased more than tenfold.”

Last year, Madonsela released a report where she recommended action against Motsoeneng for receiving exorbitant salary increases and forging his matric certificate.

However, he has stayed in his job and challenged Madonsela’s powers before the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA).

The matter was heard in court last week and judgment reserved. News24
