Municipalities have a week to hold first meeting

Municipalities have until August 24 to hold their first council meeting after the August 3 elections, the ministry of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs said on Tuesday.

The clock started ticking on August 10 when the results of the local government elections were gazetted, said Cogta Minister David Van Rooyen.

The municipal manager must call a council meeting, but in municipalities without a municipal manager, the MEC of the province can appoint an official to act in that capacity.

At the meeting of the council, the speaker will be elected after which the speaker will then take over proceedings and facilitate the election of the mayor of each municipality, the ministry explained.

District municipalities will convene after all local municipalities have concluded.

“We are convinced that all our combined efforts will ensure that the 4th Democratic Local government [begins] with its work of serving communities and delivering services,” said Van Rooyen.

In the meantime, some councils, such as the City of Cape Town, have already held their inaugural meeting, while others are waiting for the outcome of coalition talks to decide who will lead in councils where there was no clear winner.
