Western Cape police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after two people were killed and several others were injured when petrol bombs were thrown at an Intercape bus near Lwandle on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said no arrests had been made since the attack, which took place at around 19:45 on Onverwacht Street.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated,” she said.

A total of 32 people were injured. ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said four people had sustained serious injuries and 28 others were treated for minor to moderate smoke inhalation and burn wounds.

He said residents of the nearby informal settlement initially thought that shacks were on fire and arrived to see a bus was burning.

Acting Cape Town mayor Brett Heron has condemned the attack and appealed to residents to come forward with information.

“At this stage the reason behind this callous act is still unknown,” he said in a statement on Tuesday. News24
